Understanding jewelry terminology can enhance your appreciation for the pieces you wear or create. There are so many different terms, but here are the ones I get questions on the most. (I will be adding to this list as more questions arise.)

Here’s a straightforward list of key terms used in the jewelry world, along with their meanings:

  1. Lapidary

    • The art of cutting and polishing stones to create gemstones or decorative items, requiring specialized skills and tools.
  2. Lapidary Machine

    • A device used for shaping and polishing stones in the lapidary process, enabling fine craftsmanship.
  3. Stone Slabs

    • Pieces of cut gemstones or minerals, often used in making cabochons or other jewelry components.
  4. Cabochon

    • A gemstone that is shaped and polished but not faceted, typically featuring a smooth, rounded top and flat base.
  5. Bezel

    • A type of setting where a metal rim surrounds and secures a gemstone, providing both protection and a polished look.
  6. Bezel Cup

    • A small cup-like setting designed to hold a cabochon or gemstone securely within the bezel.
  7. Bezel Backing

    • The support structure behind the bezel that helps secure the gemstone in place and can affect the overall design.
  8. Bezel Decoration

    • Decorative elements added to the bezel setting, which can enhance the overall design of the jewelry piece.
  9. Polish

    • The process of smoothing and shining a metal surface, enhancing its appearance and preventing tarnish.
  10. Patina

    • A thin layer that forms on the surface of metal over time, often giving it a unique color or texture, and adding character to the piece.
  11. Rawhide Mallet

    • A tool used in jewelry making to shape and form metal without marring its surface.
  12. Mandrel

    • A tool used to shape rings and other jewelry components into a desired size and shape.
  13. Ring Size

    • A measurement of the circumference or diameter of a ring, which ensures a proper fit for the wearer.
  14. Ring Shank

    • The part of a ring that forms the band, connecting the bezel to the finger.
  15. Jump Rings

    • Metal rings used to connect various components in jewelry design.
  • Closed Jump Ring: A metal ring that is completely closed, used to securely connect elements.
  • Opened Jump Ring: A metal ring that can be opened and closed, allowing for easy attachment and detachment of different jewelry elements.
  1. Stamping

    • A method of creating designs or textures on metal by pressing a die or tool onto its surface.
  2. Jeweler's Saw

    • A fine-toothed saw used for cutting metal and other materials with precision in jewelry making.
  3. Torch

    • A tool used for soldering and melting metal, essential for creating intricate designs in jewelry.
  4. Solder

  5. Solid Brass
