How to Keep Your Rings from Turning Your Finger Green

If you’ve ever taken off a ring only to find a green mark left behind, you’re not alone! I’ve had this happen more times than I can count, and it’s especially common with brass and copper-based metals. This reaction happens when the metal oxidizes, creating that dreaded green stain. Here’s how to prevent it:

  • Apply a Clear Coat: A trick I swear by is painting a thin layer of clear nail polish on the inside of the ring. This creates a barrier between your skin and the metal, stopping the reaction.
  • Keep Your Hands Dry: Water and sweat speed up the oxidation process, so I try to take my rings off before washing my hands, swimming, or working out.
  • Choose Higher-Quality Metals: If a ring constantly turns my finger green, I swap it for sterling silver, gold, or stainless steel options. These metals don’t react the same way and are much more skin-friendly.
  • Clean Your Rings Regularly: Oils, lotions, and dirt can speed up oxidation. A quick wipe with a jewelry cloth or mild soap and water keeps my rings looking (and feeling) fresh.

If you love a piece but hate the green stains, these quick fixes will help you keep wearing your favorite rings without any surprises!
